Pain at the Pump
This weekend - Memorial Day -- is the traditional American start of summer. That's when families pack their bags, check their maps and head on down the road.
Or at least that's what many of us used to do during the summer months.
With gas prices exceeding $4 a gallon gas in some parts of the country, many American families are making tough decisions - and all too often, changing and canceling vacation plans.
A recent survey by Deloitte & Touche shows that nearly a quarter of people have changed their Memorial Day travel plans because of high gas prices. And 12% have simply canceled their travel plans.
That's trips to the shore canceled. Weekends in the mountains canceled. And visits home to see grandparents, loved ones and friends - canceled.
The American Dream is not only the big open road. It's taking time off and spending leisure time with family, friends and loved ones. That $4 a gallon for gasoline - it's not just about the economy, it's about the ties that unite us as people and as a nation.
And we'll never get that time back with grandma, grandpa and the cousins because we had to cancel it due to those high gas prices.
"Sorry, maybe next year" isn't the American way to start summer. But it's something a lot of folks are saying this weekend because of pain at the pump.

The Rest of the Story
A story in today's Washington Post talks about "the gloomiest assessment of personal economic progress in close to half a century" -- nearly four out of five middle-class adults say it is difficult if not impossible to maintain their standard of living.

Not an April Fool’s Joke
President walks into the White House, talks tough, calls everybody else weak, and then proceeds to oversee a rapid and unprecedented decline in America's economy, military readiness and energy independence. And then, same President and his Congressional allies blame everyone else for America's troubles and even attack the patriotism of those who warn that America is off in the wrong direction.

Pack my bags...my overpriced grocery bags you might say. No maops for me...I know my way to the cheapest gas station. Spending the memorial day weekend at home with the family by the grill, saving money and remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom. Hopefully a new administration (Pray for Dems) will give us some relief within a years time. More immportantly, let’s bring our boys and girls home and start building an America we can all be proud of.
It’s amazing how we can continue to pay high gas prices, and the oil company executives are constantly making substantial profits. We have seen for a while where the leader of this country puts his priorities....it’s about time we get America back on track
Speaking of hate —I dislike intensly your ad about buying oil from countries that hate us. While I do not intend to vote for Steve Pearce in the upcoming election I was glad to see that such a negative ad was not from Udall. The word HATE NEEDS TO GO. Shouldn’t we be trying to determine why so many Arab countries are mad at the USA?
